To put it simply, Headless Design is “to design efficiently by commonizing structures and behaviors other than appearance” to increase design speed. While I’m Looking into the evolution of Figma, I feel that not only the simple appearance but also the “behavior” is being expressed by design tools. One example is Auto Layout, which allows you to specify not only the appearance but also how to layout the elements inside and how the width of the elements will change when they get longer.
It would be nice if Auto Layout was applied to all the necessary places, but I think it would be too much work to apply it all the time. In addition, I think this kind of “behavior” is rarely application-specific. Buttons will grow horizontally when the text gets longer, and vertically when the card UI has more elements.
In contrast, the appearance style such as colors, typography, etc. are mostly application-specific. Therefore, I thought that if there was a foundation that standardized the behavior for each UI pattern and provided only the minimum for easy customization of the appearance, it would speed up the design process and also maintain quality.
If you look at the actual product, it’s nothing special, but I named it “Headless Design” in the hope of creating a movement that will produce various complex UI kits that embody “efficient design with a common structure and behavior other than appearance”. I named it “Headless Design” after “headless browser” which has only browser functionality and does not have look.
